Compound sentence
Take a look at these sentences!!
- Are you going to the party, or will you stay at home?
- Cats are funny animals, and they are also intelligent
- My mother moved to Jakarta, but my father moved to Bandung
Two sentences are connected using connectors (and, or, but) and they result a compound sentence. And, Or, But are called coordinate conjunction. When coordinate conjunction join two sentences, the conjunction is normally preceded by a comma.
Complex sentence
Take a look at these sentences!!
Since bill was sick, he could not come to school
John will go back home after he finishes his study
Although he wanted , the little boy didn’t take the candy
The three sentences above are called complex sentences. the complex sentence has 2 parts: independent and dependant clause.
The red words in the sentences above are conjunctions.
Independent and dependent clause
The independent clause:
is a complete thought and can stand as a sentence by itself.
The dependent clause:
is not a complete thought. It depends on the independent clause to get its meaning.
The dependent clause can come before or after the independent clause in a complex sentence. If it comes before, it is generally separated from the independent clause by a comma. But if it comes after the independent clause, it doesn’t have a comma.
Here are some conjunctions used in complex sentence
To express time : After, before, since, until, when, while, as
To express cause : Because, since, as
To express condition : If , unless
To express contrast : Although, even though, though
To express purpose : In order to, so that
To express identification : That, when, where, which, who
